Chris saw 'Life Without End' as a major stepping stone in his songwriting. He was wanting to move away from the goth format and to create a dark pop song. The song was a turning point that helped to determine the overall direction of the band after In the Shadow of the Angel. For Flowers for the Gathering the band wanted the album to sound as live as possible, and they used all of their own equipment (e.g. keyboards, sound modules, drum machines) to reproduce the band's live sound. At the time, the band was subject to a great deal of hype after In the Shadow of the Angel and it was important to Chris to show that the band was more than a cookie-cutter goth band.
